CyberSECURITY threats among us. Small mistakes, BIG IMPACT!!

Inside Threat

As the demand for digital transformation across all industries grows, the risk in cybersecurity also increases. Awareness on vulnerabilities and prevention from cyber-attacks and data breaches must be a top priority for all the members of an organization. All of these start with understanding physical security and how inside threats can affect the cybersecurity of an organization.

The threats

Most of the of data breaches we see on headlines of past news are mostly carried out by outsiders. However, most companies are already preventing this by implementing traditional security measures. It is the threats that originate from inside that are much more difficult to detect and prevent. This is because an inside threat can happen both intentionally and unintentionally.

The reality is that no matter how serious the data breach is, it’s certain that it is also caused by an action, or failure, of someone inside the company.

Below are some examples on how an organisation’s cybersecurity can be compromised.

● Unintentional

These are the threats that are very hard to predict and prevent where human error can be a major factor of data breaches. Some of these are:

Sending email with confidential information to wrong addresses.
Lost devices containing confidential information such as flash drives, disks, laptop, and other memory devices.
Unsecured ports on memory devices.
Trusting people inside or outside the company premises and giving them access to company property. This is more critical for the employees holding confidential information such as IT admins.
Social media confidential information leak.

● Malicious employees

They can also be called rogue employees as their intent is to steal competitive information, some sell data or intelligence, and some just have a feud against the company.

They can be someone who you trust inside company premises. Always remember that not all employees have the same intention. There is also a reason why there are different types of positions in a company allowing them with different levels of confidential information access.

● Thieves and Cyber Criminals

These people are experts that can compromise a company or employee by malware or phishing attacks, social media hacks, and steal credentials and devices with confidential information.

They can be within company premises posing as visitors and employees with stolen identity information, or groups working with those malicious employees. They are also experts of social engineering to break into company premises.

In many cases, the easiest way for anyone with malicious intent such as a hacker is to access the company system physically. As we gain more insights on the threats posed by insiders, it is very important to enhance the physical security of the confidential information of the company.

Through the company hardware with capability of connecting to company network systems such as computers, laptops, and servers, hackers can potentially access the company network from unsecured ports and perform malware installation, steal, and corrupt confidential data.

In line with this, Smartkeeper is introducing a line of products that provide hardware security from unwanted prying hands.
